Opening Speech: From Yoda to R2-D2: What Star Wars Teaches Us About the Four Foundational AI Agent Design Patterns — Reflection, Planning, Tool Use, and Multiagent Systems.

As AI agents move from research demos to production systems, four foundational design patterns have emerged as the building blocks of agentic architecture: reflection, planning, tool use, and multiagent systems. This talk makes these patterns intuitive by mapping each one to a familiar figure from a galaxy far, far away. Yoda embodies reflection — the discipline of pausing, critiquing one’s own output, and iterating toward wisdom rather than rushing to a first answer. Strategic minds like Princess Leia illustrates planning: decomposing a complex goal into ordered steps and adapting when the battlefield shifts. R2-D2, the galaxy’s most resourceful utility droid, represents tool use — knowing which instrument to plug into which port, and when. And the Rebel Alliance itself demonstrates multiagent systems: specialized agents with distinct roles, coordinating through communication to accomplish missions no single agent could achieve alone.

Beyond the metaphors, the session grounds each pattern in practical engineering reality. Attendees will see how reflection loops improve output quality through self-critique, how planning agents break down ambiguous objectives into executable task graphs, how tool-calling interfaces extend a model’s capabilities beyond its training data, and how orchestrator-worker and debate-style multiagent architectures trade off cost, latency, and reliability. We’ll examine when each pattern shines, when it’s overkill, and how the four combine in real-world systems — because the most capable agents, like the most effective heroes, rarely work through force alone. Attendees will leave with a mental model for choosing the right pattern for their use case, and perhaps a new appreciation for how much software architecture wisdom was hiding in their favorite space opera all along.
